Kuwait Cracks Down on Electricity Overuse with Legal Action
Spike in Power Consumption Triggers Law Enforcement Measures in Al Wafra

Kuwait is gearing up to enforce legal action against individuals and entities involved in excessive electricity consumption, especially as the summer months approach. According to spokesperson for the Ministry of Electricity, authorities recently detected an “unusual increase” in electrical loads across several areas, prompting concerns over illegal activities that threaten the stability of the country’s power system.
A large-scale inspection campaign was launched in the Al Wafra residential district, part of Al Ahmadi governorate. Investigations revealed that nearly 100 houses were consuming electricity at abnormally high rates, strongly differing from typical residential patterns. Officials suspect that unauthorized operations, including cryptocracy mining, are behind the surge.
The ministry stressed that it would enforce the law rigorously and "will not hesitate to take legal action against any individual or entity proven to misuse electricity through unlicensed activities."
Technical analyses showed that affected homes recorded steady, high consumption throughout the day and across seasons — a major red flag. Some houses reportedly exceeded 100,000 kilowatts in usage, around 20 times higher than neighbouring homes.
As Kuwait braces for increased power demands during the summer, authorities are determined to protect the country's energy resources by applying strict legal action under existing law provisions.
