Kuwait’s criminal court on Wednesday sentenced a Filipino domestic worker to death for murdering an 18-month-old Kuwaiti boy, whom she placed inside a washing machine at her employer’s home in Sabah Al Salem late last December.

According to Al Qabas, the maid admitted to the killing, telling investigators that the child had been “annoying” her. The baby’s parents discovered him inside the washing machine after hearing his cries and rushed him to Jaber Al Ahmad Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival from severe injuries.

Before issuing the verdict, the court ordered a psychological assessment, which confirmed the defendant was mentally fit to stand trial.

The case attracted significant attention in both Kuwait and the Philippines. The Philippines’ Department of Migrant Workers extended condolences to the child’s family and the Kuwaiti authorities, emphasising that the incident was “isolated” and did not reflect the values of overseas Filipino workers, over 220,000 of whom reside in Kuwait, many employed as domestic helpers.

The sentence will be automatically reviewed by the appeals court and subsequently by the Court of Cassation, Kuwait’s highest tribunal, whose decisions are final.
