Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has agreed to pay $25 million to settle a lawsuit filed by President Donald Trump after the suspension of his accounts following the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. The settlement allocates $22 million to a fund supporting the construction of Trump's presidential library, with the remaining $3 million covering legal fees and compensations to other plaintiffs involved in the case.
In July 2021, Trump filed lawsuits against major tech companies, including Meta, Twitter (now X), and Google, alleging that these platforms unlawfully silenced conservative viewpoints by suspending his accounts. Meta suspended Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts following the Capitol attack, citing violations of platform policies. The accounts were reinstated in 2023 after a two-year suspension.
The settlement was reached after direct negotiations between Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and President Trump. Discussions resumed following a meeting at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in November 2024. As part of the agreement, Meta will contribute $22 million to the fund for Trump's presidential library, with the remaining $3 million allocated to legal fees and other plaintiffs.
In addition to the settlement, Meta has taken steps to improve its relationship with the current administration. The company announced a $1 million donation to Trump's inaugural fund and appointed prominent Republicans to key positions within the organization. Notably, Joel Kaplan was named Chief Global Affairs Officer, and Dana White, CEO of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and a close associate of Trump, was elected to Meta's board.
This settlement reflects Meta's efforts to address past content moderation practices and align more closely with the current political landscape. It also underscores the ongoing challenges tech companies face in balancing platform policies with political considerations. While Meta has settled this particular lawsuit, the broader debate over content moderation and free speech on social media platforms continues.
