Microsoft Corp., a global leader in AI innovation, has announced that its Copilot digital assistant will soon allow users to personalize their chatbot experiences by recording preferences and carrying that context into future conversations.

Unveiled in a blog post by Mustafa Suleyman, Microsoft’s head of consumer AI, the update will roll out over the next few months and aims to give users more control over how AI interacts with them. Users can input preferences such as favorite foods, vacation spots, or movie choices, enabling the chatbot to respond more meaningfully in future interactions.

“Copilot will understand you in the context of your life and show up, on your terms, in the right way at the right time,” said Suleyman, who was personally recruited by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to lead the company’s AI strategy for consumers.

This move aligns Microsoft with AI rivals like:

  • Google, which announced that its Gemini assistant can draw from users' search histories
  • OpenAI, where users can now input preferences into ChatGPT
  • Amazon’s Alexa+, which adapts based on shopping and streaming behavior

Meanwhile, Microsoft clarified that users will retain full control over their data, with the option to select what information Copilot remembers or to opt out of personalization entirely—a key feature in ensuring user privacy and legal compliance in the evolving AI law landscape.

Tech Industry Race in AI Personalization

As the AI race intensifies, tech titans like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos are all investing heavily in next-gen AI systems. Musk, through xAI, and Zuckerberg, via Meta's LLaMA models, are aggressively pushing personalized digital ecosystems, while Microsoft fortifies its Copilot brand across both enterprise and consumer markets.

This announcement was strategically timed with Microsoft's 50th anniversary celebration held at its Redmond, Washington headquarters, highlighting its long-standing innovation legacy and future ambitions in AI technology.
