Muscat Court Cracks Down on Décor, Construction Firms Over Consumer Complaints
Court issues jail terms and fines against firms accused of delays and failure to honour contracts in the construction sector.
A court in Muscat has issued a series of rulings against décor, home fittings and construction firms after consumers complained of delayed projects, incomplete work and failure to honour service guarantees.
According to Oman’s Consumer Protection Authority, the cases involved companies accused of breaching contractual obligations, missing delivery deadlines, refusing refunds and failing to provide services as agreed. The rulings included prison sentences, financial penalties and compensation orders aimed at protecting consumer rights in the sector.
In one case, a company contracted to carry out thermal and waterproof insulation for a building roof reportedly failed to complete the work within the agreed timeline and did not return the payment even after the contract was cancelled. The court fined the defendants and referred the related civil claim to the competent authority.
Another case involved a kitchen design and installation company that allegedly failed to complete a Dh-equivalent OMR2,900 project despite receiving substantial payments from the customer. The court convicted the company’s representatives for failing to deliver the service properly and for not issuing invoices in Arabic, imposing fines and legal costs.
Authorities said the combined penalties in the six cases amounted to nearly OMR2,900, while some rulings also ordered suppliers to refund consumers and imposed suspended jail sentences.
The Consumer Protection Authority said the judgments reinforce the need for transparency, adherence to contracts and compliance with warranty obligations in Oman’s construction and interior décor sector.
