Omani Man Jailed for Faking Eviction Video to Mislead Public on Social Media
Suwaiq court convicts citizen for producing misleading content against the judiciary; sentenced to two years in prison and fined 1,000 OMR.

In a striking case underscoring the legal implications of spreading misinformation online, an Omani national, Fathi bin Ali bin Khamis, has been sentenced to two years in prison and fined 1,000 riyals by the Suwaiq Court of First Instance. The man had posted a fabricated video on social media, falsely claiming he was evicted from his home, showing his children in a tent in an attempt to gain public sympathy and question the Omani judicial system.
The Public Prosecution confirmed that the content posed a threat to public order and disrespected the authority of the courts. The video went viral, raising concern among legal professionals and prompting swift legal action.
Upon investigation, it was revealed that the man had never been evicted and continued to live in the same residence. He later admitted that the video was deliberately staged to stir public emotion.
The court delivered the verdict in absentia, ordering that the judgment be published across local newspapers and social media platforms to serve as a warning against such misuse of online platforms.
This case highlights the growing importance of legal oversight in the digital age, where lawyers and legal authorities are increasingly involved in addressing misinformation on social media.
