Court Orders Parents to Pay Dh15,000 After Minors Assault Neighbour’s Child
Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court Judges rule guardians jointly liable for emotional and physical harm caused by their sons
The Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court has ordered three parents to pay Dh15,000 in compensation after their minor sons assaulted a young neighbour, causing both material and emotional damage. The court ruled that the parents are jointly responsible for the actions of their children.
The case began when a woman filed a civil claim against her neighbours, seeking Dh60,000 in damages plus 12 per cent annual interest, stating that their sons had attacked her underage son and inflicted injuries. She also asked that the defendants be required to cover legal expenses.
The minors had already been found guilty in criminal court. The defendants’ lawyers argued that the civil claim should therefore be dismissed, but the court emphasised that the criminal ruling had firmly established the boys’ culpability. Two of the minors were placed under judicial supervision with mandatory periodic reporting and handed a one-year suspended judgment, while a third was fined Dh2,000 and ordered to pay court fees.
After reviewing the case, the civil court determined that the assault had caused the victim significant emotional distress, including pain and psychological suffering, in addition to physical harm. Consequently, the parents were ordered to pay Dh15,000 in compensation to the plaintiff, along with court fees and associated costs.
