BJP Leader Moves HC, Seeks CBI Probe Into Sabarimala Gold Controversy
Rajeev Chandrasekhar cites multi-state involvement and alleged irregularities in temple gold replacement, seeking a thorough investigation by a central agency.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Kerala State president Rajeev Chandrasekhar has approached the Kerala High Court, urging a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the alleged misappropriation of gold from the Sabarimala temple.
Citing a report by the Special Commissioner for Sabarimala, Chandrasekhar noted that gold coverings over the ‘Dwarapalakas’ on both sides of the sanctum sanctorum were removed in 2019. However, the official record (mahazar) described them as copper sheets. The original gold plates had been replaced with gold-plated ones, which soon showed discoloration—prompting suspicions that the replacement was intended to cover up earlier misappropriation.
It is further alleged that the plates were sent to Chennai to be replated with gold without obtaining High Court permission. Chandrasekhar highlighted the unusual need for repairs within just 10 years and pointed out that the gold removed from the temple appears to have been distributed across multiple states, involving several individuals and establishments.
He warned that current audit procedures may compromise the investigation’s effectiveness, as audits are conducted by government-controlled branches, lacking the independence needed. According to Chandrasekhar, a central agency like the CBI is essential to ensure a comprehensive and impartial inquiry.
