Sharjah has introduced a new "care leave" for female employees, extending support for mothers whose newborns require continuous medical care. This regulation, which follows maternity leave, has been approved by the Sharjah Ruler and aims to help working mothers facing medical challenges with their newborns.

Key Details of the New Care Leave Law:

  • Duration: The care leave begins after the completion of the standard maternity leave, which is one year paid. The leave may be extended annually for up to three years, provided that medical justification continues to be valid.

  • Medical Report Requirement: Employees must submit an official medical report approved by a competent medical authority to qualify for this leave.

  • Health Improvement and Suspension: If the child’s health condition improves, the leave will be suspended. A return-to-work permit will be issued based on medical guidance.

  • Extended Leave Beyond Three Years: If the leave needs to extend beyond the three-year limit, the case will be reviewed by the Higher Committee for Human Resources for a decision.

Part of Larger Directive from Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi

This initiative is part of a larger directive by Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the Supreme Council Member and the Ruler of Sharjah, to support working mothers in the region.

The introduction of care leave not only enhances the support for employees balancing their professional and personal lives but also underscores Sharjah's commitment to employee welfare and family health. The leave is also counted as part of the employee's overall service and will be considered in their performance evaluations during maternity leave.

This new law is a significant step towards providing workplace equality and ensuring that employees in Sharjah have the necessary support during challenging personal times.
