Sharjah authorities have announced strict penalties for motorists who block emergency vehicles, enforcing a Dh3,000 fine, six black points, and a 30-day vehicle impoundment. This comes in response to alarming statistics from the UAE’s Ministry of Interior, which recorded 325 accidents in 2024 due to drivers not giving way to emergency responders.

The highest number of incidents occurred in Dubai (160), followed by Abu Dhabi (107), Ajman (31), Sharjah (17), Ras Al Khaimah (5), Umm Al Quwain (3), and Fujairah (2). Authorities are intensifying enforcement and public awareness, stressing that allowing emergency vehicles to pass is both a legal obligation and a moral responsibility.

Motorists are instructed to move aside — even if at a red light — when an emergency vehicle approaches, without crossing the signal unlawfully. The law applies regardless of the vehicle’s direction — rear, side, or adjacent lane.

In critical events like natural disasters or major emergencies, the consequences are even more severe: an additional Dh1,000 fine, four more black points, and a 60-day vehicle impoundment.

Sharjah’s warning reinforces the UAE’s zero-tolerance approach to road violations that jeopardise lives, urging drivers to uphold civic sense, compassion, and responsibility.
