The UAE is preparing to phase out physical Emirates ID cards, introducing a new digital identity system based on facial recognition and biometric data. This major shift is part of the country’s continued push toward smart governance and seamless service delivery under its new policy for digital transformation.

The upcoming digital identification system, expected to be launched within a year, will enable residents to access essential services—such as banking, healthcare, hospitality, and telecommunications—without presenting a physical ID. Instead, identity verification will be performed through secure facial recognition technologies linked to the UAEPASS app.

Despite the introduction of e-Emirates IDs, residents have still been required to present physical cards in sectors like healthcare and finance. This has prompted a renewed effort to expand the digital system's implementation and reduce reliance on physical documentation.

The UAEPASS platform, launched earlier as the UAE’s national digital identity, already allows citizens and residents to request digital versions of official documents, including the e-Emirates ID. These are securely stored on government-approved apps such as UAEPASS and ICP UAE.

The move aims to streamline identity verification, eliminate inefficiencies in critical sectors, and encourage wider adoption of biometric systems. Authorities are also working in collaboration with sector partners to ensure data protection, legal compliance, and smooth integration into existing digital frameworks.
