UAE Resident Fined Dh3,000 for Posting Female Relative’s Photos on Social Media
Court upholds conviction after electronic evidence confirms abusive posts targeting the relative and her father.
27-year-old Indian man has been fined Dh3,000 by a UAE court after being found guilty of insulting and defaming a female relative by posting her photograph on social media along with offensive comments targeting her character.
Court records show that the woman was taken by surprise when she discovered her image had been uploaded on the accused’s social media account alongside abusive remarks directed at her personal conduct and reputation.
Investigations further revealed that the defendant had also shared a photograph of her father and directed similar insulting and defamatory comments at him through the same platform.
The victim immediately lodged a complaint with the police, stating that the online posts caused her severe embarrassment and humiliation within her family and social circles, particularly as she is married into the accused’s extended family. She also confirmed that neither she nor her father had given consent for their photographs to be published online.
Following the complaint, authorities launched an investigation and electronic evidence experts were tasked with examining the defendant’s social media activity. The forensic review reportedly recovered the disputed posts and documented the offensive content as part of the case file.
During questioning, the accused denied responsibility and claimed that the victim had accessed his phone and social media account using a password she allegedly knew, and had posted the content herself. However, this explanation was rejected by the court.
After reviewing the victim’s statements and the findings of the electronic evidence report, the court concluded that the material on record clearly established the defendant’s involvement in the offence. While affirming guilt, the court noted that the circumstances of the case merited leniency and imposed a Dh3,000 fine.
