The UAE has introduced major traffic law reforms to tackle reckless driving, with the Ministry of Interior confirming that offenders can now be arrested on the spot and face fines up to Dh100,000. These latest legal updates are part of a broader national effort to strengthen road safety and reduce fatalities caused by dangerous driving.

Enhanced Enforcement Powers Under UAE Law

The amended traffic laws came into effect at the end of March 2025 and grant traffic enforcement officers expanded authority. They can now detain drivers involved in hazardous behaviour without a court warrant, reinforcing the UAE’s zero-tolerance approach to life-threatening road offences.

Key Offences That Trigger Immediate Arrest

Drivers can now be arrested immediately for any of the following serious traffic violations:

  • Causing death or injury due to negligent or reckless driving
  • Causing substantial property damage while behind the wheel
  • Driving in a way that endangers public safety
  • Operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Refusing to show ID or presenting false information to authorities
  • Fleeing accident scenes, resisting police orders, or triggering police chases

Rising Violations and Government Crackdown

In 2024 alone, UAE authorities recorded 4,291 incidents of life-endangering driving behaviour. The majority were reported in Dubai, with notable cases in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and other emirates. Alarmingly, 96 violations involved heavy vehicles, which pose an even greater risk to public safety.

In response, initiatives like "Your Comment" by Abu Dhabi Police and the Monitoring and Control Center are being used to share real traffic footage to increase public awareness and deter repeat offenders.

Stricter Penalties for Major Infractions

The legal framework now imposes tough consequences on reckless drivers:

  • Causing death: Minimum fine of Dh50,000 or imprisonment
  • If caused by serious infractions (e.g. DUI, red light violation):
  • At least one year in prison
  • Dh100,000 minimum fine

  • Other reckless driving resulting in harm:
  • Up to Dh2,000 fine
  • 23 black points on the license
  • 60-day vehicle impoundment
  • Dh50,000 release fee (or vehicle auctioned if unpaid within 3 months)

Legal Experts Urge Public Awareness

Legal professionals stress the importance of understanding these revised traffic laws to avoid harsh penalties and ensure safer roads for all. With the UAE taking bold legal measures to reduce accidents and fatalities, drivers are urged to stay informed and comply with the latest legal updates.
