The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has announced an in-depth investigation into the mobile ecosystems of tech giants Apple and Google, citing concerns over their market dominance and its impact on competition and consumer choice. The probe aims to scrutinize their app stores, operating systems, and mobile browsers.
The CMA raised alarms over the “duopoly” Apple and Google hold in the mobile market, with both companies controlling key gateways to app distribution, payment systems, and web browsing. Regulators argue this level of dominance stifles innovation, restricts developer opportunities, and limits options for consumers.
CMA Chief Executive Sarah Cardell stated, “Apple and Google hold a stranglehold over mobile ecosystems, which could harm consumers and businesses alike. This investigation will assess whether their practices distort competition and whether further interventions are necessary.”
The investigation follows a preliminary market study that identified restrictive practices, such as Apple’s limitations on alternative app stores and Google’s dominance in mobile search and advertising. Developers and competitors have frequently criticized both companies for high app store fees and unfair terms for third-party services.
In response, Apple and Google defended their policies, emphasizing security and quality as core priorities for their ecosystems. Apple stated, “Our ecosystem prioritizes user safety and privacy, while enabling developers to innovate,” while Google highlighted its contributions to affordable technology and open platforms.
The CMA’s probe is part of a broader global effort to regulate Big Tech, with similar investigations underway in the US, EU, and other jurisdictions. If anti-competitive practices are found, Apple and Google could face hefty fines, operational changes, or legal mandates to level the playing field.
As the investigation unfolds, it has the potential to reshape the future of mobile technology and redefine how app developers and consumers interact with these dominant platforms.
