Federal agents have arrested a US judge from Wisconsin on charges of obstruction, after she allegedly shielded an undocumented migrant during an immigration enforcement action, intensifying ongoing clashes over deportation cases under President Donald Trump's administration.

Hannah Dugan, a Milwaukee County Circuit Judge, was accused of deliberately directing federal agents away from a migrant they intended to detain at her courthouse. According to FBI director Kash Patel, who posted about the arrest on social media, the incident created heightened risks for public safety.

The arrest adds another layer to the escalating battle between the White House and the judiciary. Many legal experts and Democrats argue that Trump’s deportation measures frequently bypass constitutional rights, with deportation cases often fast-tracked without proper hearings. The Trump-appointed FBI director emphasized, “No one is above the law,” echoing a hardline stance supported by many Republicans.

Court documents allege that Judge Dugan, visibly upset and confrontational, used a jury exit door to help the undocumented migrant — identified as Eduardo Flores-Ruiz from Mexico — evade federal arrest at the courthouse. She later appeared in a federal court in Milwaukee but made no public statements.

The Supreme Court has previously ruled against certain Trump-era deportation practices, insisting on the facilitation of returns for individuals unlawfully deported. Yet the administration has openly resisted some of these mandates, illustrating the deep divide over immigration enforcement.

The Trump administration’s aggressive deportation agenda, framed as necessary for national security, has alarmed judges, rights groups, and Democratic lawmakers who accuse the White House of undermining judicial independence and trampling on due process protections enshrined in US laws.

House Democrat Darren Soto condemned the arrest, calling it "third-world country dictator type of stuff," while Democratic congressman Jamie Raskin warned that Trump's actions represent an "intense assault on judicial independence."

Meanwhile, Republican figures have praised the move, accusing activist judges of placing undocumented migrants above American citizens.

The administration’s latest moves reflect a deepening confrontation over deportation cases, judicial authority, and adherence to US laws, with the Supreme Court, federal judges, and legal experts increasingly drawn into politically charged immigration battles.
