Epstein Files Release Spotlights Clinton, With Minimal Mention of Trump

Heavily redacted Justice Department documents feature Bill Clinton prominently while containing few references to Donald Trump.

The US Justice Department on Friday released thousands of heavily redacted documents linked to the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, with the material making extensive reference to former Democratic President Bill Clinton while containing scant mention of President Donald Trump.

The limited references to Trump stood out, given that images and records connected to him have surfaced in earlier Epstein disclosures over the years. Trump’s name, for example, appeared in flight logs from Epstein’s private jet that were included in an initial batch of documents released by the department in February.

The partial disclosure follows legislation passed overwhelmingly by Congress in November requiring the release of all Epstein-related files, despite months of efforts by the Republican president to keep the records sealed. The Epstein controversy has become a political liability for Trump, who had previously fuelled conspiracy theories about the case among his supporters.

It remained unclear how much new information the latest release contained, as many Epstein-related documents have already entered the public domain since his death in a New York jail in 2019, which was ruled a suicide. Numerous files were heavily redacted, with some documents running to more than 100 pages entirely blacked out. The Justice Department said it continues to review hundreds of thousands of additional pages for potential release.

The material included evidence from multiple investigations into Epstein, as well as photographs of Clinton, a figure long criticised by Republicans. However, the files appeared to contain few, if any, images of Trump or documents mentioning him, despite his well-documented social association with Epstein in the 1990s and early

2000s, before the two reportedly fell out ahead of Epstein’s first conviction in 2008.

Trump has not been accused of any wrongdoing in connection with Epstein and has denied having knowledge of his crimes.

Following the release, the Justice Department drew attention to Clinton’s presence in the files, with two agency spokespersons posting images on social media that they said showed the former president with Epstein victims.
