WhatsApp is gearing up for the holiday season with exciting updates to enhance the user experience across both mobile and desktop platforms. The Meta-owned messaging platform, which handles over 2 billion calls daily, has introduced a range of features to improve audio and video calling, messaging, and desktop functionality.
Selective Group Calling
Users can now choose specific participants when starting a group call. This feature is ideal for coordinating surprise events or private discussions within a group.
Fun Video Call Effects
Building on its earlier launch of night mode and video call effects, WhatsApp has added new effects, including puppy ears, karaoke microphones, and underwater themes, to make video calls more enjoyable and personal.
Improved Video Quality
Video quality for both one-on-one and group calls has been upgraded, offering higher-resolution visuals for a clearer and more reliable calling experience.
Enhanced Desktop Calling Experience
The desktop interface for calls has been revamped. Users can now:
Create call links.
Start calls directly from the calls tab.
Dial numbers seamlessly.
Voice Message Transcripts
WhatsApp now allows users to convert voice messages into text for easier communication in noisy environments or while multitasking. This feature operates locally on the user’s device, ensuring privacy. To enable it, go to Settings > Chats > Voice Message Transcripts. It is rolling out globally in select languages, with more to be added.
WhatsApp and Gemini AI Integration
A new WhatsApp extension for Google’s Gemini AI assistant allows users to make calls or send messages directly via voice commands like “Call [Contact Name] on WhatsApp” or “Send a WhatsApp message to [Contact Name].”
Revamped Typing Indicators
A new Typing Indicators feature enhances chat engagement by displaying the "..." icon along with the profile picture of the person typing, making group chats easier to follow.
Custom Lists for Chats
The recently introduced Custom Lists feature lets users categorize chats under labels like Family, Work, or Neighborhood. These lists make it easier to organize and prioritize conversations. Lists can be created by tapping the “+” in the filter bar or by long-pressing existing chats.
These updates reflect WhatsApp’s commitment to delivering a smoother, more enjoyable, and reliable communication experience. From fun effects and better video quality to enhanced privacy and organizational tools, these features are designed to make your holiday season and beyond more connected and engaging.
