Caught on CCTV: Court Suspends Jail Term in Dh352 Shoplifting Case
Woman fined after admitting to stealing branded beauty products, with court citing first-time offence and granting leniency.
A woman of Arab nationality has been handed a one-month prison sentence, suspended for three years, and fined Dh253 after being convicted of shoplifting beauty products worth around Dh352 from two prominent retail outlets in Dubai.
The Dubai Criminal Court found that the woman stole two containers of body cream, two perfume bottles and a hair clip. She was identified through CCTV footage and apprehended by a security guard at the second store, who then notified the police.
Police records show that the woman initially confessed to the theft, stating she could not resist the temptation of the branded items and did not have enough money to pay for them. During questioning by prosecutors, however, she denied any criminal intent, claiming the items had been taken by mistake.
She later changed her account before the court, admitted to the offence and sought leniency, pointing to the absence of any previous criminal record.
The court rejected her earlier denial as an attempt to avoid responsibility but exercised judicial discretion in sentencing, suspending the jail term for three years and imposing a fine, citing the circumstances of the case and her status as a first-time offender.
