A Los Angeles court has issued a temporary restraining order in favour of singer Sabrina Carpenter against a man following a series of “deeply alarming” incidents at her Hollywood Hills residence.

Court documents state that Carpenter sought the order after William Applegate allegedly attempted to force open her front door on 23 May, amid what she described as a pattern of stalking, trespass and surveillance that began around 20 April. She said the behaviour caused her significant emotional distress and fear for her personal safety.

The order prohibits Applegate from coming within 100 yards of Carpenter, her sister, and her sister’s partner, and also extends to her workplace and vehicle.

Carpenter, 27, is one of the world’s biggest pop stars, having scored top-three hits in both the US and UK with tracks including Espresso, Please Please Please, Taste and Manchild.

In her legal declaration, she alleged that the man appeared uninvited at her home on several occasions in recent weeks, attempted to break in, and refused to leave when confronted by her security team, claiming he knew the singer and that she was expecting him.

During one incident described as “deeply alarming” on 23 May, Carpenter said he reached her front door after trespassing onto a neighbour’s property and attempted to open it. He then rang the doorbell and refused to leave until police arrived and arrested him.

“He fabricated the outrageous and entirely false claim that he personally knew me and that I was expecting him. This was a complete lie,” Carpenter wrote in her statement.

She added that he returned less than 24 hours later and loitered outside her home for several hours. The following day, he allegedly came back again and parked outside the property.

Police records state that a security guard confronted Applegate during one incident and was allegedly struck by him.

Carpenter said the attempted intrusion into her home was “among the most disturbing violations of personal safety and privacy I have ever experienced”.

The Grammy-winning artist, who submitted doorbell camera footage with her court filings, requested a restraining order to protect herself and two other residents of the home — her sister and her sister’s boyfriend.

On Friday, a judge temporarily granted the request, ordering Applegate to stay at least 100 yards away from Carpenter, her home, her vehicle and her workplace, as well as the other residents.

Detective Peter Doomanis of the Los Angeles Police Department, in a declaration filed in support of the petition, said he believes the man has “developed a disturbing and irrational fixation on the petitioner”.

He added: “The pattern of his conduct, which may have begun as early as approximately 20 April 2026, reflects the hallmarks of a fixated, obsessional individual.”

“This trajectory is consistent with well-documented patterns of stalking behaviour that pose a serious and escalating risk to victim safety.”

The case has been referred to prosecutors, who will decide whether to file charges. A court hearing is scheduled for 18 June.
